Topic:
Dabrowski's Theory of Overexcitabilities
Facilitated by: Grace Neufeld, Director of Baywood Learning Center
The gifted community
has long been aware that giftedness affects more than the cognitive aspects of a gifted child. There is
almost always increased intensity and sensitivity as well, which was recognized by the Polish psychiatrist, Kazimierz Dabrowski.
In his theory, Dabrowski talked about the superstimulatibility of the nervous system, which has been translated into
English as overexcitabilities. This means that a gifted child is likely to respond more deeply
and meaningfully to something that others may not even notice. Overexcitabilities express themselves in
five different areas; psychomotor, sensual, imaginational, intellectual and emotional. These intensities
have been found to correlate with giftedness.
In this interactive
parent meeting we will use the Overexcitability Inventory for Parents to measure overexcitabilities and explore their
impact on gifted children and families. We approach the dynamics of overexcitabilities from a positive and proactive perspective
and emphasize self-care for parents.
BLC Parent Support Group, led
by Grace Neufeld usually meets the last Thursday of each month except December when we take a two-week break for the holiday.
Come chat with us, bring your concerns, thoughts and positive energy. Meet other parents of gifted children to discuss
the challenges and share ideas. Meeting time is 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Childcare $5 per child.
