FAQ about BLC Homeschool Classes

Q. Must my child/children be considered gifted in order to attend the homeschool classes?

A.  No! If you feel your child would benefit from a particular class, we encourage you to enroll.  Giftedness is not a requirement to take single classes at Baywood Learning Center, but we have taken great care to address the uniqueness of precociousness.  We encourage you to audit a class to see if it would be a good fit for your student/s.

Q.  What is the difference between BLC homeschool classes and homeschool classes offered by other organizations?

A.  BLC classes are designed for high ability children who have a special interest in the topic being offered. For this reason, BLC classes feature the following:

  • Longer class sessions to allow in-depth exploration; most BLC classes are 1.5 to 3 hours in length, which is 2 or 3 times as long as other classes in other venues.
  • Classes are taught by professionals in the field, often these professionals are highly educated and gifted themselves or have demonstrated excellence in their field.
  • Material is presented with opportunities for hands on learning; building critical thinking skills is fundamental and is developed through experimentation, discussion, multi-media and guided discovery processes facilitated by trained instructors.
  • Some mild learning differences can be accommodated; talk to the Director prior to signing up to find out if this class can accommodate your child's learning style if you are not sure. We can work with dyslexia, dysgraphia, but not strong ADHD. Mild ADD and mild ADHD can usually be accommodated Often Gifted learners present these symptoms when bored.
  • Ages stated for the class are flexible. If you have a young, advanced learner who needs even more acceleration, he or she is welcome to join a more advanced class for older students
  • BLC classes do not offer a lot of practice or drill work.  Sometimes instructors provide internet resources or other materials for additional exploration at home.
  • BLCclasses emphasise Learning over Teaching, are more interactive and less compulsary.

Q.  How do I know if a BLC homeschool class would be appropriate for my child?

A.  If your child is interested in the topic, please feel free to sign him or her up, we believe parents are good judges of what topics their child would like to learn. If you are not sure, please contact the Director for more information.

Q.  How will I document what my child has learned in class?

A.  When your child successfully completes a course with BLC, he or she will receive a special certificate of completion, which describes the course work completed and the State Standards that were covered.  Some classes will have work samples that can be added to your child's portfolio.
