Changes at Baywood Learning Center

Baywood Learning Center tranforms through the Positive Disintegration theory of Dabrowski

A Dabrowskian Positive Disintegration at Baywood
The alternative day school at Baywood Learning Center is temporarily closed for a couple weeks while we undergo a process of refinement, structural improvement and fine tuning. effective February 1, 2010
We will announce the re-opening date soon.

We will continue to offer enrichment classes during this transition, however our regular program will be not be operating, We are undergoing a Dabrowskian Positive Disintegration towards  raising our performance to Level 4 of the Dabrowski Theory, One of our goals is to raise public awareness of the needs of the gifted population: build an awareness  that these needs are under-served, that these needs should be served as much as those on the other side of the bell curve, that this population is vulnerable and has great potential.  When we complete this transition we will be able to begin this part of our work. On Dabrowski’s Level Four the personality begins to reach out to change society and impact the world.  Another purpose of this transition is to improve the overall execution of our educational program. I believe we do have the definitive model for gifted education, based on Learning Partnerships rather than the traditional hierarchal power-over structure, however our execution of this model will benefit from overall refinement and better execution on all levels.

We are undergoing Restructure and program improvement in preparation for a significant expansion of our services. We are hiring new staff, expanding enrichment class opportunities and overhauling administration functions and enrollment procedures and opportunities.

We will be offering an increased enrollment. Going from 20 students this last year to 32 students, from 2/3 mentors last year to 4-6 mentors. This will be the last year we offer part-time enrollment schedules for homeschoolers.

Announcing:Junior Grade!

What is the Junior Grade? Junior grade is a special grade for gifted and precocious children ages 4,5,6  for whom placement in a regular Kindergarten may result in a traumatic or stressful learning experience due to the following risk factors:
     1. the child already reads

      2. the child is emotionally sensitive

3 the child is cognitavely advanced and would not have a social peer group
4 the child would not do well in a large class setting due to overexcitabilities.

At Baywood Learning Center Junior Grade students may work at any grade level in accordance with their ability regardless of the number of grade skips involved. Even though they may advance to several grade levels ahead academically, they'll get to stay in their appropriate peer group. By allowing the students to advance at a pace that is comfortable and safe, the student is not put into the stressful situation of feeling as though they need to hide their abilities. this is especially important for gifted girls, who are more suseptable to the social pressure to "fit  in", and frequently start to hide their gifts, tragically, this can cause permanent loss in educational potential.
