Fairness Dialogues: Searching For
Needs When A Gifted Child Says "That's Not Fair!"
Do you ever struggle to see the beauty in a person's claim of
fairness? Doing what a child perceives as fair may be only one of many options to satisfy that child's deeper needs. I want
to use the tools of Nonviolent Communication (www.cnvc.org) to explore what needs would be met if the child got what he/she wanted.
Since I am worried about attaching intense importance to a specific strategy, I want to check if there are other options
that can attend to those same needs. I hope that connection to the needs can help all involved express
requests that are more likely to be heard with joy and partnership. In this workshop, I intend to practice
with live examples from participants.

Empathy Explorations with Gifted
Children: Tools for Hearing What Matters
When you feel uncomfortable, there may be needs involved that
have not been acknowledged yet. I want to look beneath anger or habitual preferences to pay attention to what matters most
to us. In this skill building class, I intend to share tools for being present with a person just as they
are, without trying to fix anything. My hope is that by hearing what is important to each other (using
tools of Nonviolent Communication www.baynvc.org) in our families and schools, and trusting that our own needs are held with care, we
will be more likely to contribute to each other with joy and effectiveness.
